Inchokkillissa
for Guitar and Percussion

by Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate [10:00]

The music of Inchokkillissa is based on an old Choctaw Indian church hymn entitled Worth of the Soul. Southeastern Indian have been integrated with European Christianity for over 300 years. Hymns are sung in traditional languages during church services and combine Southeastern Indian melodies with Christian story lines. This particular hymn is quoted in fragments at the beginning of the work and is based upon the performance of Choctaw singer Harry Folsom.

Inchokkillissa was premiered April 24, 1994 at The Cleveland Institute of Music, with James Perez Bonney on guitar and Gregory A. Hicks on percussion.
