Nitoshi' Imali
Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra

by Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate [40:00]

MPR Cover Story

Nitoshi’ Imali is a highly personal piece that is dedicated to my wife, Ursula Running Bear.  Nitoshi’ Imali means “for Little Bear” in my Chickasaw language.  Ursula’s Indian name is Little Bear and she loves the classical guitar.  The first movement, entitled Serenade, features and develops a love song from her tribe.  The second movement is entitled Taloowa’ Aailánchi’, the Chickasaw way of saying “Theme and Variations.”  The theme is based on an abstracted bone whistle/war cry sound.  The third movement, entitled Scherzo, is based on abstracted rattle sounds from my tribe’s stomp dances.

Nitoshi’ Imali was commissioned by the American Composers Forum with funding from the Joyce Foundation for the 2006 Joyce Award for Music. It was premiered on October 27, 2007, with soloist and GFA winner, Jason Vieaux, and the Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis, conducted by Cary John Franklin.
